Thanks to medical progresses, early detections, and screening programs, more people diagnosed with cancer receive lifesaving treatment, and have a greater chance of living many years after their diagnosis. A cancer diagnosis also means regular medical appointments and check-ups, and the need to adapt lifestyle behaviours to prevent worsening of one’s health condition. For these reasons, living with a cancer diagnosis is often likened to living with a chronic illness.
A cancer diagnosis is a life changing moment and forces people to adapt the way they live and think about themselves. It is common to feel distressed following the diagnosis and many embark on an emotional rollercoaster going through various states including denial, bargaining, anger, and sadness. People may wake up accepting one day, and angry the next.
Having the medical team to discuss treatment plans, and schedule appointments can bring a sense of routine, which could be comforting especially in the early days. But once the main treatment is over, many people feel lost and confused about how to live with their illness in between follow-up appointments. The emotional aspect can take its toll on other areas of life and increases the risk of mental health decline.
Finding a “new norm” can be difficult and overwhelming for some.
